Optimus Prime sighed as the list of names continued to scroll across the screen in front of him. Although he was an Autobot, a robot with sentience , and didnt technically possess a heart, the list of deceased Autobots and Decepticons, another faction of sentient robots, weighed heavily on him. When the names stopped scrolling, the computer displayed two more lines of information-
Search result: 256 deceased, 0 new members found
All Spark Stability: 2.5% Warning: Critical level
As the last line continued to flash, Optimus turned from the computer and slowly walked out of the room.
Optimus didnt hear his name being called until he had practically collided with the Autobot trying to get his attention. Despite the disappointing computer results, Optimus spirits were slightly raised due to the Autobot who had stepped in front of him.
Bumblebee, Hello. Optimus greeted the short, yellow Autobot.
Optimus, youve been acting strangely since you left the information room. Did something bad happen? Bumblebee waved his hands and tried to read Optimus minimally expressionless face.
No, neither bad nor good, the same as yesterday. Optimus placed a hand on Bumblebees shoulder.
Bumblebee looked up at the sky. The same huh? So, no new survivors?
Optimus shook his head. Against his hope, it seemed only Optimus and a few Autobots and Decepticons were still active. Megatron, the tyrannical leader of the Decepticons who had led the final assault against the Autobots a month ago, was marked as one of the massive casualties of that battle.
And Megatron? Bumblebee asked nervously.
Sorry, no sign of the one who did this. Optimus said as he ran a finger over Bumblebees metallic shoulder, which had a massive tear sustained during the battle.
The yellow Autobot took his leaders hand in both of his own. It doesnt hurt. Besides, what matters is this. Bumblebee placed Optimus hand on his chest, where his Active Engine rested and closed his eyes. As long as this continues to run, I live for you. As Bumblebee began to say something else, the two Autobots were suddenly interrupted.
Ex-CLICK-cuse me, Prime? May I have a mo-CLICK-ment? The inconsistently loud static-lined voice surprised Optimus and he quickly drew his hand away.
Bumblebee frowned at Ratchet, the Autobots Primary Medical Engineer. Although he knew that Ratchets vocal synthesizer had been crushed by Megatrons own hands, Bumblebee still found it unsettling and didnt like being around him. Optimus, Ill go on ahead. Bumblebee left the two Autobots to talk.
As Optimus prepared to enter hibernation status for the night, he heard a knock on the door to his room.
Enter. He was expecting this visitor, although not so late at night.
Bumblebee quietly walked into Optimus room and closed the door behind him.
You wanted to see me? Although the Autobot was familiar with Optimus room, he was always nervous when he would come into it.
Bumblebee, sit down. I have something to tell you. Optimus waved Bumblebee to a seat by his hibernation chamber.
Is this about what Ratchet and you discussed? Bumblebee wasnt sure if his nervousness came from what Optimus was going to say or because he was in such an intimate location with Optimus himself.
Yes, it does have to do with that exactly. Optimus replied honestly as he sat across from Bumblebee.
As Optimus looked at the smaller Autobot in front of him, he suddenly forgot what he was going to say and a silence fell between them.
Optimus? Am I supposed to guess? Bumblebee tried to ease the mood.
"The All Spark is inert", Optimus suddenly announced. "We might be the last surviving generation of Autobots."
The last generation? Bumblebee knew what the individual words meant, but the mere concept of extinction was beyond comprehension. Is that what Ratchet said?
Its what I already knew, even before this last battle; the All Sparks energy is fading. The tumultuous usage of it to create new Autobot soldiers to replace those who were destroyed only accelerated its decay.
Bumblebee shook his head slowly, So, what this means is?
Unless we find another way to insert consciousness into inanimate shells, the history of Autobots and Decepticons will end with us. Optimus said.
Surely there must be something we can do? Bumblebee asked.
Ratchet thinks he has a solution. Optimus said with hesitation.
Really? How? Bumblebee was too excited to notice the slight inflection in Optimus voice.
He thinks that he can insert an existing Autobots consciousness into a smaller shell. Optimus began to explain.
An existing Autobot? But, what good will that do? We need to find a way to create new Autobots not transfuse them into new shells. Bumblebee interrupted.
The shells, they are different from vehicles or other inanimate objects. Optimus continued.
Different? You arent implying that, are you? Bumblebee was furious and shocked.
The only way to carry on our legacy is to do such a thing. We need bodies which can create new life without the All Spark. We need human bodies. Optimus words sounded clear.
No. Thats impossible! I will go out and find a new mineral or something. Just not this, we cant do this. Bumblebee pleaded with Optimus.
Ive already made my decision. Tomorrow, I am going to be the first to let Ratchet transfuse my consciousness into a human form.
Optimus! You cant! Thats completely absurd! You have no idea if itll even work!
Bumblebee. As your commanding leader, I will not allow insubordination, not even from you. My order is final.
Optimus. I cant. I wont. Bumblebees words mumbled to nothingness.
Im sorry Bumblebee. I know its difficult, but please trust me in this.
Bumblebee stood and sat beside Optimus on the hibernation chamber. Optimus, Ill do as you ask. In return, I want to go search for a new mineral, something which can replace the All Spark. If the transfusion were to fail and you died, I couldnt bear it. So tomorrow, I want to leave here and regardless of the outcome of your transfusion, I will not return.
Optimus sadly nodded, raised his right hand and placed it over Bumblebees chest. I understand. Then tonight will be the last time well be together.
A slot opened over Bumblebees Active Engine and a cable protruding from Optimus hand entered it slowly. Bumblebee winced and Optimus stopped.
"Does it hurt too much?" Optimus asked with concern.
Bumblebee shook his head and told Optimus to continue after the initial pain had subsided. Bumblebees eyes shrunk to slits and he couldn't believe that Optimus' unbelievably long cable still continued to enter. Bumblebee's vision began to fade to muted color and then he saw nothingness.
Early the next morning, Optimus watched as Bumblebee reverted to his automobile form and drove away. He waved and wished that he had tear ducts to express the regret and loneliness inside. After all the time spent with the Bumblebee, Optimus was still not certain of his relationship with the Autobot. As Bumblebees dust trail settled, Optimus turned to the Mechanical room where Ratchet and Optimus new life awaited.
